Operating Globally Business is no longer confined by geographical boundarys. Many of Australias corporations produce goods for export, or form a component of the supply chain of an organisation based in a foreign country.

It is likely that if you operate with international business partners they will request a record of your organisations CO2e footprint.

Things are not always what they seem....It would be considered common sense for a consumer to assume that a locally/regionally produced product such as lamb would have a lower overall carbon footprint than lamb that has been shipped, literally, halfway around the world in order to end up on the supermarket shelf - but is this really the reality?

Measuring the carbon dioxide emissions of food’s freight ignores the total environmental impact of food production and consumption. CO2 emissions can be produced at every stage of the food life cycle – from seeding to harvest, processing to storage and from shopping to food preparation.

For example, a New Zealand study showed carbon dioxide emissions were four times less for lamb produced in N.Z. and exported to Europe, than if produced in the E.U. This is because in the EU lambs require heated shelters for the winter months - this consumes far more energy and results in more emissions being produced than the unsheltered lamb raised in NZ and subsequently shipped halfway around the world.

The Exporters Challenge Australia relies heavily on its exports to consumer markets in the US and UK, however one of the major buyers of Australia's exported goods now requests that an items "food miles" or carbon footprint be accounted for on product labelling. While it is not presently mandatory that suppliers provide this information, consumer demand will eventually result in the information needing to be supplied or the product may lose market share and eventually be dropped from shelves.

The key challenges include;

  • collation of relevant data, and defining what is relevant to the manufacturing of the finished article
  • defining operational boundaries & scope of responsibility
  • over/ under reporting CO2e due to multiple units or organisations within the whole supply chain

Ndevr's Greenhouse Emissions Reporting solution will provide complete and comprehensive CO2e information as it relates to all areas in the supply chain under the control of the corporation - even though this may involve multiple business units and subsidi aries that operate on disparate systems across multiple national, or even global, locations.
